Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services is proud to provide culturally appropriate health care to Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander communities on the Far South Coast of NSW. We believe that our community deserve medical, dental and other health services that are culturally appropriate.

MEDICAL CLINIC

BULK BILLING
The Katungul medical clinic is a bulk billing service that has a non-discrimination policy. Both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members can receive treatment by making an appointment or simply walking in.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services has an incentive program that encourages Indigenous people to have health checks. Once you complete your health check you can choose from either a $20 gift card or Deadly Choices shirt.
OUTREACH CLINIC
Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services holds an outreach clinic at Wallaga Lake every Tuesday. Doctor Lisa Hyde, nurses and Aboriginal health workers travel from Narooma to provide general health services.

On days the GP is unavailable, Aboriginal Health Workers are on hand to perform general observations, blood pressure checks and sugar level tests. They also offer assistance and support as needed.

Katungul medical services will assist in developing team care arrangements and GP management plans. Aboriginal Health Workers will do house visits as required to offer management and support.

DENTAL CLINIC

TREATMENTS & SERVICES
The Katungul dental clinic is available at both Narooma and Bega clinics for Indigenous patients. Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services offers state-of-the-art dental services delivered by a permanent dentist and dental nurse.
SERVICES PROVIDED INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
  • Examinations & diagnosis 
  • X-rays (small)
  • Oral hygiene instructions
  • Preventative treatment including scale & cleans, polishes, fissure sealants and fluoride application
  • Teeth extractions 
  • Management of soft tissue pathology
  • Root canal treatment (anterior teeth and premolars only)
  • Restorations direct (white fillings only)
Katungul currently DO NOT offer the following dental services:
  • Root canal treatment for molars
  • Dentures or denture repairs
  • Crowns 
  • Implants
  • Cosmetic procedures including veneers and teeth whitening/bleaching
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Endodontic surgeries including root resections, apicemtomy etc.
  • Surgical periodontal treatment 
Patients must meet the following criteria to be eligible to received dental treatment from Katungul: 
  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Be eligible for a 715 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Health Assessment.
  • Have an up to date Health Check 715 and be an active patient of Katungul. 
  • For dental treatment and support, please contact your Katungul dental clinic.

EYE HEALTH AT KATUNGUL

REGULAR VISION TESTS
The Katungul Eye Health program involves vision testing and diabetes checks performed by a Sydney-based eye specialist.

Tests are conducted every two months at the Bega, Narooma and Batemans Bay clinics. Outreach programs are also available at Moruya, Eden and the Wallaga Community Outreach Centre.

Eye checks, frames and basic lenses are all bulk-billed and are accessible to Indigenous people free of charge.
Tests and frames are free, lenses B/B if you hold a concession card and subsidized if no concession card is available.

For further treatment, patients are referred to Dr Larkin in Batemans Bay.

Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services offers several services targeting the social and emotional well-being of Indigenous people and their communities. All programs are PMC funded.

A range of counselling services are available, including the following:

  • Koori connections- all sites -Monday to Friday
  • Strong Families, strong communities - Batemans Bay (concentrating on youth)
  • AOD- all sites -Monday-Friday 
  • WDO - Work Development Orders- all sites , administered from Batemans Bay 
  • General counselling
  • Social work (assistance with Centrelink and housing)

  • Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress

NDIS SUPPORT
The National Disability Service (NDIS) is a Federal Government scheme that provides funding support to people living with a disability and their carers. Katungul is NDIS accredited and is helping members of our community walk through every step of the NDIS process, to access disability support.

WOMEN’S HEALTH AT KATUNGUL

Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services offers woman-to-woman treatment to ensure the comfort and ease of patients receiving women’s health treatment. Women’s health services available at Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services are:
  • Pap smear cervical clinic
  • Sexual health screens
  • Breast screening
  • Domestic violence (debrief and referral)
  • Sexual assault (debrief and referral)
Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services educates women on issues such as smoking and pregnancy, alcohol and pregnancy, contraception, safe sex and STIs.

OTITIS MEDIA (GLUE EAR)

otitis media
Otitis Media, also known as glue ear, is an acute or chronic middle ear infection that, if left untreated, can result in permanent hearing loss. Children from six to eighteen months may experience OM, with the infection common up until the age of four.

Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services, in association with the Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD), has developed a program to combat otitis media through prevention, early detection and treatment. Screening for OM is held in schools from Ulladulla to Eden three times a year. The program also provides education for families and teachers.

This program has led to the establishment of the Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) outreach clinic at Goulburn, Batemans Bay, Bega and Moruya, which is regularly attended by an ENT specialist from Westmead Children’s Hospital. Children with chronic OM are immediately transferred to the ENT clinic for further treatment.

ADMINISTRATION SERVICES

The administration services of Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services are the backbone of the organisation. Without administrative staff, the day-to-day functioning and funding Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services receives would cease to exist.
THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF KATUNGUL’S SERVICES. THEY LOOK AFTER:
  • Medical scanning and filing
  • Dental scanning and filing
  • Data entry
  • Phone calls and booking appointments
  • Booking transport for patients in the community
  • Supporting clients wherever possible
  • Liaising with Doctors, Nurses, Dentists, Aboriginal Health Workers and external Health Professionals
The Medicare manager is an integral member of the administrative team. It is their responsibility to take care of the billing, processing and receipting processes that enable Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services to offer a bulk billing service - free of charge.

The administrative staff also works on drafting and submitting funding applications. When granted, these funds enable Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services to provide the high quality, culturally specific treatment to which the community has become accustomed.

KOORI CONNECTIONS

Koori Connections is an Australian Government program funded by PMC designed to help close the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians.

Koori Connections provides Indigenous clients with information and supported referrals to a range of local Indigenous and other community services and programs. Koori Connections aims to provide Indigenous clients with lasting improvements in their social, health and financial wellbeing.

Koori Connections operates through a network of state-based, not-for-profit service providers in urban and regional areas across Australia to provide the following:
  • Lasting social, health and financial improvements through supported referrals and advocacy.
  • Information and referrals to community services and programs across a range of Indigenous and other services and programs, such as legal, health, employment and housing.
  • Help and opportunities for clients to develop skills to help themselves.
  • Services include WDO, Deadly Choices, School Holiday Programs and many more.

PATIENT TRANSPORT AT KATUNGUL

Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services understands that it can be difficult for clients to travel to our Bega, Narooma and Batemans Bay based clinics. In this instance, transport is available for clients who:
  • Are Indigenous & are a regular Katungul Client (3 visits in a 12 month period)
  • Are referred by Katungul services
  • Have no access to a vehicle
  • Are not on work cover
TRANSPORT VEHICLES
Transport vehicles have baby seats, capsules and boosters available for family transport.

Transport is available on appointment from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Contact your Katungul clinic to make a booking.

DRUG & ALCOHOL

smart recovery
The Drug & Alcohol team are a team of seven community support workers with a focus on clients with substance dependence issues and support for effected families. 
Some of the services offered are group counselling, one on one counselling, support in recovery, transport to rehab & detox and family support.
