Katungul Stories - Meet Tony Candy
Tony is one of Katungul's NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) clients who recently had a lift installed in his two-story home.

“Five years ago, I developed diabetes after a bad case of pneumonia. In 2016 my right leg was amputated as a result. After months of rehabilitation I returned to my 2-story home in Tuross where I’d lived for 10 years, and was soon accepted as a National Disability Insurance Scheme client. It was pretty obvious to my support workers and my occupational therapist that my home needed to be modified so that I could access the community. A lift was recommended but NDIS didn’t see that it was necessary or reasonable. It was frustrating listening to public servants tell me over the phone what I did and didn’t need – or suggesting that I sell my home and move.
In 2017 I moved my NDIS plan to Katungul. Deb Diggins (Katungul NDIS Manager) and I always had faith that the NDIS would find a way for me to get out of my home. Due to the lack of process and the lengthy time it took NDIS to address my challenges, we needed to appoint an advocate to help me with the review process. With the support of Katungul and my advocate, an application was made to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. When my case was accepted a legal aid solicitor was appointed to challenge the NDIS’s decision about my life.
Just under a month ago now, I had a lift installed in my home after a 3 year battle with the NDIS. I’m still in a bit of freedom shock. I keep looking at the lift and wondering if it’s going to disappear or something! The lift means I can go downstairs and water my own garden, check my own mail and talk to people like any other person might. I used to present community radio with a friend on a Wednesday night at Community Radio 2EAR-FM and play harmonica in a band called the Nashberries so I’d like to get back to doing that again. Most importantly though, I can go out with my friends and family. My daughter often comes to stay from Canberra and they’ll go out for lunch or go shopping and now I can go with her.
Katungul’s NDIS Manager, Debbie has been the instigator, facilitator and life coach throughout this whole process. If it hadn’t of been for her, this wouldn’t have happened. She’s just an amazing lady. It’s all thanks to her that I’ve got my life back”
